Hans-Gert Poettering makes cautious assessment of ETA announcement - "We cannot pay a political price for peace".
Hans-Gert Poettering, Chairman of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament, made a cautious assessment in Plenary of the terrorist group ETA's announcement of a "permanent ceasefire" released today. The announcement must not have a political price.
Poettering emphasized there could be no political conditions from ETA. "Meeting demands from terrorists is not possible. This would mean that we accept that terrorism has a place in politics. This we reject", Poettering said. The rule of law must be maintained in all circumstances.
